DNPA Code of Ethics

Introduction

The Digital News Publishers Association (DNPA) has voluntarily drawn up this Code of Ethics for its members. The purpose of this code is to outline high standards, ethics, and practices in digital news publishing. It does not seek to involve itself in the day-to-day operations of publishers, who maintain complete editorial and content independence. The DNPA aims to protect Constitutionally mandated freedoms while ensuring responsible digital journalism.

Basic Precepts

  1. Legal Compliance: Digital news websites must adhere to the laws of the land, including the Constitution of India, relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), and the Information Technology Act, 2000 (where applicable).
  2. Independence and Integrity: Publishers, journalists, and content entities should maintain their independence. The DNPA respects their editorial autonomy.
  3. Accuracy, Transparency & Fairness:
    • Accuracy: Eschew publication of inaccurate, baseless, or distorted material. Pre-publication verification is mandatory.
    • Defamation: Avoid publishing defamatory content.
    • Right of Reply:
      • Incorporate comments or versions of individuals or parties in response to allegations carried in news reports or articles.
      • If there are developments, update the news item appropriately.
    • Take Down, Delete, or Edit:
      • Correct false or inaccurate information promptly upon approach by concerned parties.
      • Delete the entire article if it contains false information.
  4. Respect Intellectual Property Rights:
    • Copyright: Respect copyright in text, photographs, plans, diagrams, cartoons, etc. Obtain prior permission and acknowledge moral and ownership rights.
    • Trade Marks and Service Marks: Do not use third-party trademarks without permission, except where fair use applies.
